Pontificating ... not ...

Last week I had a new experience. My friend and tremendous artist Gary Hoff invited me to write a guest book review for his blog, The Studio Journal. I chose a book that I bought - for its cover, no less - once upon a time: Joseph Sheppard's "Bringing Textures to Life" (North Light Books, 1993). Funny how things happen sometimes. Despite the exquisite cover painting inexplicably not appearing as a demo within the book itself, Sheppard's tome has since become a seminal reference. His no-nonsense methods for working through the business of completing a painting left a deep impression on me, and I have continued, over these past many years, to pick up something new every time I open the book. After nearly twenty-five years, that's pretty good. Want to know more? Check the review on Gary's blog.

Which art books have been indispensable to you? Let me know in the comments, and maybe we'll start talking about books here too. And thanks again, Gary!

Brie--thanks for your guest post on The Studio Journal. Knowing your exacting standards, I ordered the book myself. It's definitely worth the time. Thanks again.

Thanks, Gary! I'm so glad you like the book. Sheppard's workmanlike attitude is what stuck with me. Painting is darned tricky to start with - it doesn't need to be made any harder. Other books that are crucial? I'm hoping folks will chime in. Rob Howard's "The Illustrator's Bible," for starters!
